5 Cakes You Can Make Without An Oven


Cakes? Delicious.

Ovens? Practical, but it can be quite a hassle to use if you’re not familiar with the settings. One wrong setting might just ruin your whole dessert.

On the other hand, steaming your cakes is a foolproof way to cook your dessert with the most fluffy results.


1. Chocolate Moist Cake

A fudgy cake that will definitely satisfy your chocolate cravings. This decadent chocolate cake is perfect for a weeknight treat.


For the cake:

1/4 cup butter
1/2 cup + 2 tablespoon fresh milk
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
Pinch of salt
1 large egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla


For the ganache:

1 cup all-purpose cream
1 cup dark chocolate chunks

First, you’ll need to combine butter, sugar and milk in a saucepan. Cook over low heat until the sugar is dissolved. Then in another bowl, beat the egg and vanilla. Add the butter-sugar mixture and whisk it together until well combined.

Sieve the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder and salt together. Then gradually add dry ingredients to the other mixture.

Pour the cake batter into a cake pan and cover with foil. Steam for 40 minutes.

For the ganache, you’ll need to scald milk in a saucepan over low heat. Add in the chocolate chunks then stir until the chocolate has melted.

Once cooled, pour the ganache over the cake.


2. Ma Lai Gho

Also known as palm sugar cake. A traditional treat, Ma Lai Gho is a sweet cake with a smoky taste. If you want to cook it more traditionally, you’ll need to get a bamboo steamer.



250 grams all-purpose flour
200 grams palm sugar block, slice thinly
1 tbsp sugar
2 egg yolks
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
200 ml boiling water
50 ml vegetable oil


First, add the palm sugar into the boiled water and mix well. In another bowl, sieve the flour, baking powder and baking soda inside. Add in eggs and sugar.

Then add in the palm sugar water little by little. Add in oil, then mix all ingredients until its mixed well. Pour the batter into the cups. Steam for 15 minutes.


3. Apam

If you’ve got leftover rice in the fridge, this is another way to use it. A kuih with a soft and fluffy texture and a unique taste.


2 cups of rice
3 cups of water
1 cup of sugar
1 packet of yeast
3 cup of rice flour
1 cup of flour


First, you will need to blend the leftover rice. Add in water, sugar and mix well. Add in the yeast and flour and let it sit for an hour to rise. Once fully risen, pour the batter in the pan then steam it for 15-20 minutes.

If you want to make sure the apam is super fluffy, make sure to sieve the flour.


4. Corn Cheese Steamed Cake

If you feel like having something savoury, this corn cake could be perfect for you.


½ cup all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 large egg
2 Tbsp milk
2 Tbsp granulated sugar
1 Tbsp vegetable oil
¼ cup corn kernels
¼ cup shredded cheese


Combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder then whisk well to combine. In another bowl, whisk the egg, milk, sugar, vegetable oil together until combined. Pour the mixture into the flour and mix well. Add the corn and cheese then mix. Steam for 12-13 minutes.


5. Fruit Cake

A perfect addition during festive seasons, this fruit cake is not only rich but ??


500 grams of mixed fruits
350 grams of plain flour
300 grams of white sugar
250 grams of butter
50 ml of hot water
3 eggs
2 teaspoons of baking soda
1/2 teaspoon of cream of tartar
1 teaspoon of mixed spice or nutmeg powder
1 teaspoon of vanilla essence


Lightly grease the your preferred baking tray. In a pot, put the sugar in and cook over medium heat until it turns into a golden brown sugar syrup. Add 50ml of hot water and stir until the sugar dissolves.

Put the butter in the hot sugar syrup then add the mixed fruit. Let it simmer for 5 minutes the leave it to cool.

Once cool, sift in the nutmeg powder, baking soda and plain flour, fold until well incorporated. Add in the beaten eggs and stir until smooth.

Pour the batter in a baking pan then cover with aluminium foil.

Steam the cake at high heat for 2 hours. Then take of the aluminium foil and do a skewer test, if it comes out clean, your cake is ready.
